“The Color’s Extra”, photographs by Jim Marx
“I still think in black and white, the color’s extra”, is how Jim Marx visualizes his photographs
when he works. Circle of Friends Gallery in Atascadero is pleased to announce the opening
of “The Color’s Extra” on Sunday, August 14th featuring photographs by Jim Marx of San Miguel.
Gifted with a fine sense of composition, Marx explains how he works: “I see it, I think it, I feel the
image. I continually work to make the camera capture the image I have up here (in my head)”.
But Jim Marx first sees it in black and white. “I am a person who finds beauty in all things in this
world. My camera is how I am best able to express that”.
That motivation and drive for photography started with a Brownie Hawkeye camera presented as
a gift when Marx was a child. Raised in the Southern California desert, there was plenty of wildlife
to catch his observant eye.
While a teenager, Marx received his first 35mm camera from a neighbor. Suddenly color came
into his photographic world along with the dark room experience. Marx learned early that,
“The most boring of photography is at eye level. I am on my knees, my butt, on my back and on
my stomach finding the way into an image.”
Amazing contacts during Marx’s life affected his love for the art of photography. "Red Skelton and
Ansel Adams helped shape my interest in development of composition, and study of light. I knew
both men and held them in high regard for the passion of their art."
Marx’s first love may have been black and white film, but new technology beckons him to
continue the exploration of color and light. “Digital rekindled in me the desire to work with images
in color”.
The Color’s Extra opens at Circle of Friends Gallery August 14th and runs until September
18th. The Gala Opening is August 14, 2PM-5PM. For directions to the gallery visit
