A Summer Garden
A summer garden is the theme of a gala opening for
two local at artists at the Circle of Friends Gallery in Atascadero on
August 23. Maggie
Macro and Monique Snow, both fairly new to the central coast, will be
featuring two distinct art styles.
Macro, whose formal training was in Great Britain, has
experience in many forms of art, but her water color pieces will be the
focus of the upcoming show.
Under the tutelage of professional artist, Elizabeth Kincaid, she
has gained well-deserved recognition from local artists and patrons,
winning a first prize at the Mid-State Fair.
In addition, in the spring of 2005, she won the Arnie Nyback
award in the Aquarius Show in San Luis Obispo, became a signature member
of the Central Coast Water color Society in 2007, and in 2008, won the
coveted Carol Bateman Award at the Mid State Fair.
Her work is a creative
and unusual blend of
vibrant color and striking design, often prompting the question “Is that
watercolor?”

Photography is the speciality focus of Ms. Snow’s selections for the August 23 event. Proving that adversity is often the mother of creativity, Snow’s interest in photography as an art form grew from a condition that developed during childhood - dyslexia. Since reading National Geographic was out of the question, she studied the amazing pictures found in that publication and realized she wanted to create her own. Linda Hamilton, a professional photographer, mentored Snow, and Stephen Curtis, well-known local black and white photographer, instructed her on the basics of “F” stops and depth of field. Snow’s work has been featured in many local establishments and earlier this year, she had a private show in San Luis Obispo at the Photo Shop. She recently expanded her print medium from the traditional photograph to unique glass cutting boards and canvas.
